Religion Final- Christian, Islam, Buddhism
Dear Abbot,
My parents are so unfair! They expect me to get good grades at school, work afternoons and weekends at my father’s gas station AND watch my baby sister whenever they go out. I even have to spend all my vacations at my grandparents’ house with all my stupid cousins. They won’t let me date or even go out with my friends, and I’m fifteen years old! What should I do?

Want to Be a Kid

1.)    Dear Want to Be a Kid,
Hello, and thank you for your question, I am eager to help you with your question…  there is a few quotes from the Bible that I can give you to offer you some advice,  “He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding. Proverbs 15:32.” Some other advice that I can give you is that your parents just want the best for you and to be humble while helping them out with your baby sister, “A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke. Proverbs 13:1” along with also inspiring quote, “He who scorns instruction will pay for it, he who respects a command is rewarded. Proverbs 13:13.” One of the Ten Commandments that is within the Bible states that, “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” What this quote means is that you should respect your parents; I know that they are being “unfair” but they are just trying to give you a good life and teach you what the real world. This also can help you with your future, having good grades could get you into your dream college, the work experience can help you in the job force and give you an edge above your peers. When it comes to dating, the Bible states about dating, “Each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God…No one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. 1 Thessalonians 4: 4-6.” I hope this has helped you with your question, please contact me if you have anymore.

Sincerely,
Pastor Humble-Heart

2.)    Dear Want to Be a Kid,
Hello, thank you for your question I am happy to help you with it as much as I possibly can. According to our Islamic teachings, to be obedient and to show kindness to parents has been enjoined in the Holy Quran in such a manner as to say that among the noble deeds, to obey parents, treat them respectfully. The Holy Quran states that, “Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in thy life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honor. Surah Al Isra 17:23.” According to the Prophet Muhammad, the parents of a certain person are his Heaven or Hell. What this means is that if a person obeys his parents, attends to the needs of their parents and keeps them happy and comfortable, then he will attain Paradise. But if he is disrespectful and rude to them, offends them by ignoring their needs and feelings or causes them grief in any manner, his place shall be in Hell. Now I am not sayings that you will go to Hell for believing that your parents are being “unfair”, just respect their needs and help them. When it comes to dating in the Islam religion, the word dating does not exist among Muslims. Young Muslim men and women do not enter into relationships; their families choose that also in the Islam tradition pre-marital relationships of any kind are forbidden. I hope this has helped you with your questions, please feel free to contact me again if you have future questions.

Sincerely,
Respect-thy-Self

3.)    Dear Want to Be a Kid,
Hello, I found your questions very interesting and would personally like to thank you for sending me your questions. Our religion of Buddhism is not a family-centered religion, the reason as to why this is because the role of renunciation, detachment, and the individual’s pursuit of enlightenment. The virtue of renunciation derives from Siddhartha’s Great Going Forth, at which point he forsook his family and family obligations as a son, husband, and father. The goal of detachment also impinges negatively upon family life. The inherent nature of having a family and family relationships produces attachments that constitute formidable obstacles to achieving detachment from worldly affairs and desires. What I would do about your problems is when you are feeling upset or angry towards your parents for being “unfair”, just meditate this can help you feel a sense of enlightenment and peace within your very own being. But here is another piece of advice that I can give you, family life in Buddhist ethics rests upon the proper roles and responsibilities that characterize the parent-child relationship. Children are expected to be obedient and to preserve the traditions of the family, just remember that when believe that your parents are “unfair”. When it comes to dating the Buddhism religion a man and a woman do not date, instead, depending upon cultural traditions, marriages are either arranged between two families or decided upon, so there is no sort of dating. I hope that my advice has given you some enlightenment into your life, if you have more questions please contact me.

Sincerely,
Light-of-Enlightenment

Dear Abbot,
My friends and family are always on my case to get me to stop smoking. But I say it is my own body and I can do with it what I please. What do you think?
Signed
Smokey

1.)    Dear Smokey,
Hello, thank you for sending me your question, here is some advice that I can give you that will help. There really isn’t a specific Bible verse telling us not to smoke, however there are Bible verses that tell us to take care of our bodies. You should not only just look at smoking from the effects it can have psychologically or physically, but should also look at the spiritual component of the habit. Would God want you to do something that harms the body in any way? Would God want you to do somrthing that becomes an uncontrollable habit? Here is a quote from the Bible speaking of caring for your body, “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was give to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bough you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.” Smoking can become an addiction, for your body becomes attached to the chemicals and your mind does as well, the Bible gives us a warning about using excessive drinking of wine as an example. It tells us to seek the Holy Spirit to feel good rather than other chemicals, because God will lead us on the right path rather than a path of physical destruction. “Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 5:18.” You must also look to this quote for inspiration, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:2.” I hope this helped answer your questions, feel free to contact me if you have any more.

Sincerely,
Pastor-Humble Heart

2.)    Dear Smokey,
I have read over your question and hope you give you the best advice as much as I can. Islamic scholars have had mixed views about tobacco because there has not been a clear fatwa (legal opinion) to allow or forbid cigarette smoking. The reason why is because cigarettes are a more recent invention and did not exist at the time of the revelation of the Qur’an in the 7th century A.D. Therefore, a person cannot find a verse of Qur’an or the words of the Prophet Muhammad saying that “cigarette smoking is forbidden.” In our time though as the dangers of tobacco use have been proven, scholars have become more unanimous when speaking of tobacco use which is clearly haram (forbidden) to believers. In the Qur’an, Allah says, “…he [the Prophet] commands them what is just, and forbids them what is evil; he allows them as lawful what is good, and prohibits them from what is bad…Qur’an 7:157.” The Permanent Committee of Academic Research and Fatwa in Saudi Arabia stated that, “In view of the harm caused by tobacco, growing, trading in and smoking of tobacco are judged to be haram (foribben) The Prophet, peace be upon him, is reported to have said, “Do not harm yourselves or others.” Muslims are forbidden to harm themselves or others, Allah says, “…make not your own hands contribute to your destruction…Qur’an 2:195.” When it comes to your family and them wishing you to quit smoking for it is harming not only your being but theirs, in the Qur’an, Allah states that, “Those who annoy believing men and women undeservedly bear on themselves a glaring sin. Qur’an 33:58.” I hope this advice has helped you with your question, contact me again if you have any more.

Sincerely,
Respect-thy-Self

3.)    Dear Smokey,
Hello, thank you for your question and here is some advice I can give you on your current situation. When it comes to the Buddhism religion and our opinion on smoking, we have Buddhist practices that give us a way to examine out mind-habits and compulsions and see how they control our actions. Why would anyone of any religion or culture engage in behavior that harms the body and confuses the mind? As Buddhists engage in the process of Buddhists practices many begin to let go of destructive personal habits. Buddhism tunes our attention to within ourselves, not outside, by understanding ourselves we understand how this world and existence came to be. Because we keep ignorantly looking outside for satisfaction, we only keep ourselves within confusion and bad habits. When it comes to the monks, the stricter ones get closer and more serious they are about enlightenment and the Way. The less strict are starting out and still causing harm or offenses…if they improve then they’re on the way towards bodhi. And when they cut off all desires and attached thoughts, that is the way to enlightenment because the mind is still. If you are still attached to cigarettes, then your mind is currently shattered for you are contained within other worldly pleasures. Buddhists scriptures do not directly address the issue of substance addiction. Karma refers to the law of cause and effect in a person’s life. According to the law of Karma, “You are what you are and do what you do, as a result of what you were and did in a previous incarnation, which in turn was inevitable outcome of what you were and did in still earlier incarnations.” For a Buddhist it is all about dealing away with worldly pleasures and seeking out breaking bad habits that are harmful and finding enlightenment. I hope this has helped, contact me again if you have future questions.

Sincerely,

The Religion: Secular Humanism?

The reason as to why I placed a question mark after secular humanism is because Christian fundmentalists believe it is one while those who are part of this "religion" consider it not to be a religion. Personally I do not believe that it is a religion, due to the fact that they follow no supernatural force (ex. Jesus for Christians, Muhammad for Islams). Secular Humanism is interesting...they are committed to the use of critical reason, factual evidence, and scientific methods of inquiry, rather than faith. They have a primary concern with fulfillment, growth, and creativity for humankind in general. I found a great site that talks more in detail about secular humanism and what they believe: http://www.secularhumanism.org/index.php?page=what&section=main

The Religion: Mormon

So once again...I hate to admit the fact about finding out about this religion...it was a few years ago while watching T.V. and South Park came on which lead me to learn about this religion. I use to live back in West Virginia and back there, there was mostly Christains so I never got to know about this religion til we moved out here to Arizona. The Mormon religion is a very interesting one... I learned that Mormons believe that the Gospel of Jesus Christ, was restored on the earth through the Prophet Joseph Smith, and it is the path to happines in this life and life eternal. They believe that many churches, even those who are non-Christian churches, have part of the truth that could bring them back to life with God and Jesus Christ after death. I stumbled upon a great website that has a lot of information on the Mormon religion: http://whymormonism.org/

The Religion: Sikhism

Upon reading about the Sikhism religion...I hate to admit this but my first thoughts went to the Love Guru...it was a good little joke to me, and sometimes during the reading I kept seeing Mike Myers in my head. But back to the point about the Sikhism religion...it was a very interesting religion and had so much, this was one religion that I knew about but I did not...if that makes any sense at all. One question and topic that kept coming up for the Sikhism religion was about the Five K's. The members of the Sikhism religion that are committed to it are expected to wear the Five K's...the first is Kesh which is long, uncut hair...the second is Kangha which means comb...the thrid is Kach which means short drawers...the fourth is kara steel bracelet...the fifth Kirpan means sword. So my question is why do they have to wear them? I looked toward the BBC religion website for my answer...and there was a ton of information for me to help understand... this is the site and I will look upon it for future reference.... http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/sikhism/customs/fiveks.shtml

The Religion: Islam.

Turning through the pages in our book, my eyes became a little bigger once they fell upon the 99 names that the Islam religion has for Allah. Before reading about this religion, I had the steorotype in my head about the Islam religion...:(. But after reading from our book, I realized that this religion is not like the steorotype paints it out to be. There was many questions that I had about the Islam religion...and the very first one came from our reading...why is Allah Odd? And how do they know that he likes odd numbers? I discussed this question with my mother, and she believes that since he is just one that is why he is odd...and with the numbers since he is one that could be a reason behind it. But it still made me wonder to the root of my question, why does the Islam religion have so many names for Allah? I came across the answer on WikiAnswers... The reason why Allah has so many names is because it describes God's attributes as given by God in Quran. After obtaining that answer I wondered what was the Quran is it like their sacred book? The Quran is indeed their Holy Book. Here is a website with a ton of info on it for future reference and questions: http://islam.about.com/od/quran/Quran.htm

The Religion: Christianity

My favorite religion...due to the fact that it is my own. When I was looking through the class materials at the beginning of the semester I was so excited that we would get to study and dig deeper into my very own faith. When it comes to my religion, I always feel such love, compassion, and understanding when speaking of it...the Christian religion has the most follows in the whole world and has many different types of branches. (I am an Indepedent in case you was wondering). I admit that I have not been to chruch in a long time, but to me I already have a strong love, faith, and connection to God so I do not always have to attend chruch in order to be "a good Christian". When it comes to my religion, I do not know everything about it and often have many questions about it...so my question about it is why is there so many different branches of Christianity? How come there is just not one main one like other religions have? When looking for the answer to this question, I came across many negative sites and people that were bashing other religions...and though I have a strong faith I do not think that bashing is a way to get your point across. What I did find was a Bible quote:
Ephesians 4:5, Paul tells us that there is "One Lord, one faith, one baptism," not many Lords, many faiths and many different forms of baptism.

The best advice that I can obtain from this quote would be to ask a local elder or a pastor of a chruch...the internet is great and all but sometimes getting out and asking someone the answer will bring what you were searching for.

The Religion: Judaism

The Jewish faith is truly one that has always been interesting too me, and it is closely tied to my Christian faith. How I first came across the Jewish faith was when I was younger during high school and I was watching an eposide of Family Guy...a little ashamed of that...but at least I learned about it. After seeing that I decided to dig deeper into the Jewish faith and came across something that was a complete shock, along with being a question that makes me wonder. Why does the Jewish faith not believe that Jesus was their Lord and Savior, even though Jesus followed the Jewish faith? I decided to look to the ever faithful Google to obtain my answer. What I came across was that the Jewish faith believe that he was just an ordinary man who was a preacher that lived during the Roman occupation of the Holy Land. The Romans executed him for speaking out against Roman authority and abuses...but the Romans also executed others who did the same...so that is where they believe that. The website I got that information from was: http://judaism.about.com/od/judaismbasics/a/Jewish-View-Of-Jesus.htm it speaks a lot about Jesus and what the Jewish faith believes, it definately helped me understand more about the Jewish faith.

The Religion: Zoroastrianism

When I first showed the name of this religion to my mom, she made the joke about do they worship Zoro, the cape wearing, masking wear and sword bearing hero. :P I laughed, but upon furthur review I sadly found out that Zoro is not in this religion at all...darn! When reading through the chapter of our book about this interesting religion, I found out something that made me go...Ewww....This religion has some weird ways but it is what they believe and I can not judge them. The thing that was the most interesting was that they cleanse themselves with bull urine before they do their prayers and worship. Why would they do that? Is that safe and clear? I am just glad that my religion does not make me cleanse myself with bull urine. :P. Compared to Eastern religions we over here in the West think they ways are odd, but I bet the same can be said for the other way. There is many sites that I found with information on this religion, here they are:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/zoroastrian/

http://www.religionfacts.com/zoroastrianism/index.htm  (this is a good site with alot of information)

The Religion: Shintoism

Maybe this is the Western person in me, but some of these Eastern religions are very confusing to me and in some ways I do not understand how some of these religions form. In the Shintoism religion they worship Amaterasu-Omikami whom is a woman. Now in my many religions the religion often worships a man as the sun goddess (example being the Egyptian religion where Ra is a man whom is the sun god.). I wondered why does Shintoism worship a woman as their supreme god when in most religions it is a man. I do like the fact that it is a woman but that is because I am a woman. :P. Just joking, everyone is equal. :).  When I was searching through Google, I found some sites that were useful to help answer the questions of my other members of my religion class. Here they are:

http://death.findyourfate.com/life-after-death/shinto.html   (this one talks about the Shintoism religions beliefs of the Afterlife)

http://www.patheos.com/Library/Shinto/Beliefs/Afterlife-and-Salvation.html   (Note: The patheos website is always helpful and has a ton of information! I recommend it highly!)

The Religion: Confucianism and Taoism

Here is much information on the web about Confucianism and Taoism, there is two websites that go into great deal about these religions, I found both of these websites very helpful with many of the questions that I had. Both of these religions have very interesting points about the afterlife that is completely different from what I believe but it is interesting to see what others think. :)

Exploring Local Religious Expression for Religion Class.

 Ashley Weigand
10/5/11
Comparative Religions

Exploring Local Religious Expression

1) What house of worship did you visit? What religion and denomination(s) or sect(s) does it serve?
a. What time and what day of the week did you visit?
b. Did you go with someone or did you alone?

Living in the small town of Bagdad, Arizona, I did not have many choices as different types of religions, due to the fact that this small town is mostly a Christian town and that is the faith that I follow. But I did happen to find out that my town has a small Catholic Church, and that is the church I decided to go too. The Church is called St Francis Catholic Church and is located on 216 Cook Street. I decided to go to the Church during a Sunday, just like I would if I was going to my Church on a Sunday. I went by myself since the rest of my family was sleeping.

2) What is the setup of the worship space?
a. Are men and women separated? If so, where does each sit?
b. Are people set up in a circle? Are they facing a specific direction?
c. Is the building a small one, or is it very large? How many floors are used for the worship service?

Within the Church everyone sits together, the men and the women are not separated and the children are also among them, until it is time for the children to go off to Sunday School, while the adults stay with the preacher. The people are set up facing straight forwards towards the preacher. Out here in Bagdad everything is small, back where I use to live in Moundsville, West Virginia, my old church doubles in size compared to this one. Though The St Francis Catholic Church is the biggest in the town, it is a large building and there is only one floor to the church.

Describe the décor or items in the building that establish its identity as a house of worship.
d. What types of music did you notice during the service, if any? If you could describe it in a few words, what does it sound like to you?

One thing that I absolutely love about Catholic churches is the glass paintings of angels and other religious people like Mary, Jesus and such. The type of music that they play is songs from the Bible, I always love these songs though I am not the greatest singer in the world, every time I sang these songs as a way to praise the Lord, I always feel a sense of being warm and safe. It is one of the best feelings in the world in my opinion.

3) What is the title of the head celebrant (the priest, preacher, etc)? Is it a man or a woman? Is there more than one head celebrant, or none at all? What is his/her/their role in the service?

Down here in Bagdad the title of the head celebrant is a Bishop, he may also be called Father while a person is confessing their sins to him. The head of this church is a man, I did not get a chance to catch his name due to the fact that he was quite busy with others within the church. Being in Bagdad there was only one head celebrant, I am unsure if in a bigger community or town that there would be more. His role was to preach to the people of the church, to led them in song and pray, to tell the children when it was time to go to Sunday School, and he also listens to the sins/confessions of those who wish to repent in the eyes of the Lord.

4) What is the structure of the worship service? That is, what specific events occur during the flow of the service? Sometimes there is a flyer or schedule provided that details the structure of the service that can help you distinguish what is happening.

The structure of the worship service was very much like that of the Christian religion. You are given a flyer/schedule at the beginning of the service and it is a detailed list of when things should happen, what should be coming up next, there is also little stars beside something’s meaning that this could be changed or it may take longer than estimated.

5) How do the celebrants (congregation members) act during the service (solemn, joyous, quiet/loud, etc.)? Are they expected to sing or talk during the course of the service?

The way that the celebrant acted was like how my pastor acts, he was very passionate about what he said and he wanted to reach out to people, he knew how to get your attention by sometimes being loud and other times speaking softly to make you listen. During the course of the service the celebrant leads the people in song and prayer.

6) If you follow or have followed a specific religious tradition, how does this service differ from those you are familiar with? How is it similar?

There is only a few differences between the Catholic religion and my Christian religion, one thing that differs is that we call our head celebrant pastor or priest instead of Bishop. Also the Catholic religion prays to the Virgin Mother Mary, while within my religion we pray to Jesus, the Son of God. Due to the fact that Catholic is a branch of Christianity there is not many other difference that I could see.

7) In what ways do you see the concepts we’ve been discussing in class reflected in the service you attended. Is there an evocation of the numinous? Are social guidelines or personal rules of conduct taught or demonstrated? Does the worship foster a sense of group identity? Referring to the appropriate chapter in our text (you may have to read ahead a bit for this), does the worldview presented in the text for this denomination match what you observed in this service?
Within the Catholic Church, the teach rules to their other members from the Bible just like the Christian faith. In my opinion, and from what I watched and observed was that the people within the group had a very strong faith and belief and that their worshipping gave them peace and comfort along with giving them an identity. From what I read in our book there is some differences, I think it is a matter of opinion and the person has to actually see and experience the religion before they can truly get a good grasp on it.

The Religion: Buddhism.

I must say that there is much about the Buddishm religion that confuses me. The one thing that I am consistently asking myself about this religion, is why do they believe that we humans have no souls nor no selfs? Are we just empty shells to be filled with organs with no soul that defines us each, and makes us our own person? Also, why does Buddishm not have a God or Gods, like many other Eastern religions? This religion was a little difficult for me to understand, and I also felt a sense of being uncomfortable. Though I did not judge a person who believe this, since everyone has an opinion and their own minds. To answer many of my questions I came across a website, that answered the questions I had about Buddishm. http://online.sfsu.edu/~rone/Buddhism/footsteps.htm   I will have to share this site with the others in my Religion Class.

First Blog Ever!

Well it is official I finally got a Blog, this blog is completely and only for my College semester. It is weird to be blogging, but I always take challenges and difficult things head-on. Other than writing events about College, and leaving posts about sites that will help me. I also will use this like a little journal when I have the time, between college and life. So...go forth and conquer! :P
